The egg-mobile, a movable chicken coop popularized by Joel Salatin at Polyface Farm in Swoope, VA, plays an integral role in the day-to-day operation at Frith Farm. The 7x14 ft. vehicle serves as a portable henhouse from where eggs are laid, and is also used as a shelter for the other chickens and as a concentrated source of nitrogen-rich droppings to fertilize the soil. To prevent over-grazing and saturating a given area with manure for more than two days, the egg-mobile has the ability to be moved around when necessary. Pairing its functions with the tendencies of the chickens is a perfect example of finding a way to use nature to benefit the farm in more ways than one.
