Life Cycles

With the arrival of a second batch of Freedom Rangers earlier today and three Large Black piglets on Saturday, the number of animals on the farm are quickly becoming a handful to manage. The chicks, in particular, require a higher level of attention because they are extremely sensitive to weather fluctuations and must always have enough food and water in their troughs.

I ran out of luck on Thursday morning when I found an older chick, stiff and plucked on by the edge of the fence. It had rained the previous night, and it also happened to be their first time living outside the hoop house without a brooding lamp. Cold and wet, the chicks instinctively huddled together, unfortunately suffocating one in the middle of the heap. But the cycle of life on the farm found use for the limp carcass, which the pigs gladly consumed to the point of leaving no trace behind.

  1. omg omg the chicks are so cute.

I wonder if you ever want to cuddle with any of the animals... or maybe you are just used to seeing them as work?

  2. Haha yeah, they are pretty adorable. I could watch them run around for hours (and cuddle with them). The only tough part is having to get up so early to check on them and that they poop on their water a bit too much.
